Chinese Meat Stew (húnshāo)

Chinese meat stew is a delicious and versatile dish that can be prepared in many different ways. Similar to the traditional Hungarian stew, the meat is cut into cubes and then browned in fat. Then, vegetables, spices, and liquid are added, and the stew is simmered until tender.
Ingredients:
500 g pork shoulder (or chicken breast), cut into cubes
2 tablespoons oil
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon ginger, grated
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
1 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
400 ml chicken broth
200 ml water
Instructions:
Heat the oil in a large skillet. Add the meat and fry until golden brown.
Add the onion, garlic, and bell pepper and fry until the vegetables soften.
Add the ginger, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, chili powder (if using), salt, and pepper, and mix well.
Pour in the chicken broth and water and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer the meat until tender, about 1 hour.
Tips:
To enhance the flavor of the stew, you can add a little brown sugar.
Chicken broth can be substituted with water and 1 tablespoon dried chicken broth.
The stew can be served with rice, noodles, or mashed potatoes.
Variations:
Instead of pork, you can use chicken, beef, or beef shank.
Broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, or mushrooms can be added to the vegetables.
The spices can be adjusted to taste.
